High Altitude Takeoff Challenge – 6,000 ft Mountain Strip in the Dolomites

A calm late-summer morning in the Alps: we take off from Innsbruck Airport (LOWI), crossing the Brenner Pass into the Italian Alps. Following narrow mountain canyons and alpine valleys, we reach one of the most spectacular landmarks in the Dolomites – the Tre Cime di Lavaredo / Drei Zinnen.

From there, we continue to one of Europe’s most challenging mountain strips: Casera Razzo. At 6000 ft elevation, only 360 meters long, and with a 3–4% slope, it’s a true test for both aircraft and pilot. Thin air, wet grass, and rising tailwind conditions leave us debating whether to land at all.

After several low passes, we commit. Touchdown is firm and controlled – but the performance margins are razor-thin. Our 70-year-old Cessna 170B taildragger proves its capability once again.
After a successful high-altitude takeoff, we follow the valley toward the Adriatic Sea, ending the day at Caorle (LIKE) in golden evening light.

Gebirgsflugplatz am Limit - hier wird die Luft richtig dünn!

Ein später Sommermorgen in den Alpen: Wir starten vom Flughafen Innsbruck (LOWI) und überqueren den Brennerpass Richtung Italien. Entlang enger Täler und Bergcanyons fliegen wir zu einem der bekanntesten Wahrzeichen der Dolomiten – den Drei Zinnen.

Doch das eigentliche Highlight erwartet uns erst: Casera Razzo – ein Gebirgslandeplatz auf 6000 ft Höhe, nur 360 m lang und mit rund 3–4 % Steigung. Dünne Luft, nasse Wiese und beginnender Rückenwind machen die Entscheidung zur Landung nicht leicht.

Nach mehreren Überflügen entscheiden wir uns dafür. Die Landung gelingt – aber die Performancegrenzen sind deutlich spürbar. Unsere 70 Jahre alte Cessna 170B meistert auch das.
Nach dem herausfordernden High-Altitude-Takeoff folgen wir dem Tal hinunter bis zur Adria, wo wir den Tag im italienischen Caorle (LIKE) bei La Dolce Vita und goldenem Abendlicht ausklingen lassen.
