Mike Tomkies was a glamorous, globe-trotting journalist, who lived between European capitals and rubbed elbows with Hollywood royalty such as Doris Day, Steve McQueen and Robert Mitchum.

But one day, at 38 years old, he realised it wasn’t simply enough. He retreated to the wilderness and turned his back on his easy, urbane life. He settled into an existence tending for animals and the natural world, and employed his writing prowess producing films and books about the wonder of nature, especially Scotland, where he settled for a long time.
