LET’S GO EXPLORING
Do you like exploring? Going on an adventure, where you’re not sure what’s round the next corner. Where what you experience stands out sharp and new, so you’re learning all the time. And what you learn might change the rest of your life.
Are you up for it? If so, come and walk through these pages. Our journey starts in a European country like no other, but it’s really a journey into the Kingdom of God, the seen and unseen world that overlaps every country on Earth, where God does miracles every day, where he definitely wants you to get involved. In fact, it’s where he invites you to live.
So…. first stop: North Macedonia, a country right on the fringes of Europe. Meet the people of this wild, exciting land and begin to share my passion. Maybe God will call you to pray for it. One day you may even go and support his church there. If so, you’ll be following the Apostle Paul, whose vision of the “man of Macedonia” 1 took him there nearly 2000 years ago. Just as the Holy Spirit performed miracles through Paul in Philippi and elsewhere, you’ll see astonishing miracles in North Macedonia today.
Later on, we will fly off to East Africa to see some miracles there, but we will also be spending time at home; God’s Kingdom is everywhere. We just need to learn to see it. The miracles God is doing in Macedonia and Africa, he’s doing in your country too. His invitation is here and now. He has much more to give you than you maybe realise: closeness to him, gifts and challenges too.
It's time to start our journey…
A European country like no other
A woman sits on the bare floor of her house. In front of her is a 25kg bag of flour, a bottle of cooking oil, a few other basic essentials like lentils and dried beans, a can of fish, and a packet of biscuits. The food parcel will be enough to feed her and her family for a month, just.
She is not in drought-afflicted East Africa, or a refugee from the Middle East conflict. This is a Roma lady, suffering poverty in Europe whilst fuel and food prices rocket. As I write this, her family are eking out their lives on that donation from our UK charity.
Nearby, is a rickety building the size of a garage in a British or American home. The gable wall had partly collapsed so there was no protection from bitter winter winds. The grandmother has recently died, but a family of 8 still lives there. Now, though, the local church has stepped in. Repairs are completed and firewood provided. God is at work.
It’s Easter. Men, women and children, 230 of them from all over the country, are crammed onto a third-floor balcony worshipping God. The 4-storey building acting now as the church HQ had been bought for half the normal price. It was too haunted for anyone else to want it. The evil spirits arrived when a baby had been killed there; it was deformed, unwanted. Before the church could move in, we had to kick out the evil spirits.
Now, three years later the building is filled with lively singing. The Easter Nova Nadezh (New Hope) celebration has drawn people from all over North Macedonia, driving for hours to get here in well-worn minibuses. People are becoming Christians. A young father, who is a church leader, describes the brain bleed that should have killed him a few weeks earlier, had God not intervened. People keep on coming forward. They are being healed from physical illnesses, addictions and mental issues, or meeting their Saviour for the first time.
“The blind receive sight, the lame walk… the deaf hear... and the good news is preached to the poor.”2 It’s happening here, now.
It may sound incredible, but it is real, and this journey of spiritual discovery is for each of us. We start from exactly where we are, and take one step at a time into what Jesus has for our lives. This book is not for or about spiritual superstars. It is for the everyday follower of Jesus, who wants to go deeper into the adventure that God has for us, starting from exactly where we are.
Turn the page. Let’s explore the Kingdom and be open to whatever God says and does. See how great our God is... And learn to see miracles...
