It has a rich history, unique geography, gorgeous people, and interesting facts. As you follow along in this exciting tour of the country of George Weah, kindly endeavor to identify points you would love to comment on.

About Liberia: Location and Size
Officially known as the Republic of Liberia, this a country located on the West African coast. With a beautiful Atlantic coastline along its southern and southwestern regions, it shares its northwestern border with Sierra Leone and its northern border with Guinea. Ivory Coast (or Cote d’Ivoire) is on the east. Liberia’s capital city is Monrovia, a city named after former President James Monroe of the United States, one of the prominent figures behind how freed Americans would have Liberia colonized. Monrovia doubles as the largest city in Liberia. The name of the country is a derivative of the Latin word “liber” which means “free.”
This is in recognition of the fact that this country was created to be home to liberated African-American slaves. This partly explains why the country’s flag is modeled on the USA’s. The single star on the Liberian flag symbolizes the country’s status as the only independent Western-style country in Africa. It also has 11 stripes representing the 11 men who endorsed the Liberian Declaration of Independence. We’ll tell you more about that later when discussing the history of the country.
Liberia is a medium-sized country with a total area of 43,000 square miles. This makes it the 102nd largest country in the world. Based on the 2023 estimate, about 5,506,280 people are living in the country making it the 120th most populous country. Based on the population and the area, the population density of Liberia is about 92 people per 1 square mile. English, precisely Liberian English, is the official language of Liberia, but the country has over 25 other languages by different ethnic groups and in different parts of the country.

Geographical Features
Liberia lies between latitudes 4 degrees and 9 degrees north, and longitudes 7 degrees and 12 degrees west. Almost one-fifth of the country’s population lives in Monrovia alone. According to the last census, other populous cities in the country are Gbarnga, Buchanan, and Ganta with respective populations of 56,986, 50,245, and 42,077. The country’s landscape is characterized by majorly flat to rolling coastal plains containing mangroves and swamps, which also rise to a rolling plateau to low mountains in the northeast.
The country has 15 counties for the purpose of administrative divisions. These, in turn, are divided into 90 districts while each district is made up of clans. The land is rich in biodiversity, rich in many rare species of flora and fauna.

History of Liberia
Let’s begin the history of contemporary Liberia from 1461 when it welcomed the first European visit. Portuguese sailor Pedro de Sintra reached the Liberian coast that year though the name Liberia had not been known. Between then and the late 17th century, Dutch and British traders also had contacts and trading centers in the region. While the Portuguese named the region Costa da Pimenta (meaning Pepper Coast), it was later known as the Grain Coast because of the abundance of Melegueta pepper grains. The traders engaged in trade by barter to exchange commodities and goods with local people.
