How to spool up carp reels and remove line twist

Matt shows you step by step how to strip and re spool your carp reels with new line and how to avoid and remove line twists.

In this video, I’m re-spooling with some Berkley Big Game but you can follow these instructions with any monofilament or braided mainline on a fixed spool reel.

I start by showing you how to strip three spools simultaneously. Then, before you start spooling, you need to soak your new line in a bucket of soapy water for about 30min. This will clean it, soften it and lubricate it. There are different ways for the line to come off the spool and what I have found is that the line goes on the spool better if it is spinning horizontally. Other people will recommend that you take it from the front of the spool, the back of the spool, depending on whether it’s coming out clockwise or anticlockwise. For the lines that I have used, it works better if it comes straight off the spool.

After you attach the line to the spool with a slip knot, you can start spooling up. You need to maintain tension on the line through your fingers at all times and wind in at a steady pace. Also, make sure that you put enough line on the spool. If there is a 2 or 3mm gap from the top of the spool lip to the line, you will shorten your casting potential by a massive amount.

Before you start fishing with your new line, you need to stretch it and cast it a few times to help bed the line in. When you cast your rod for the first time, it’s important to keep the spool lubricated. Just pour some lake water over the spool so that the line peels off the spool easily.

I finish this video by showing how to avoid and remove line twists from your line when you’re fishing. Line twist can happen when line comes off the spool through the clutch. If you slacken the clutch and pull line off the clutch through the rings, every turn that comes off the clutch is a twist in the line. To avoid creating twists in your line, open up the bail arm and pay off what you need. Another way of doing it is to turn the anti reverse off and backwind. If your line has become twisted, you need to walk the line out and then reel it back in under tension. You’re taking the twists out of your line because the line is free to spin at the cut end. You might need to do this a couple of times to eliminate the twists properly.
