On Saturday, 6 RCWA volunteers and 2 Elk Grove Anti-Trash volunteers participated in the Dry Creek Conservancy’s first salmon count of the 2024 winter season at Miner’s Ravine in Roseville!
After receiving our instructions, we split up into 9 groups and made our way to our starting point. Immediately upon entering the creek, we spotted blankets and clothes in the water, so we did what we do best … clean! ????
After a bit of a slow start due to the trash and debris, we fell into our shoulder-to-shoulder formation and made our way upstream scouting for live salmon, carcasses, and spawning nests (redds).
Though we found more trash than salmon, we did spot 3 live salmon in the creek - David captured 2 of them on video! We were all so excited to see the very thing we have worked so hard to achieve, more salmon reaching their historical spawning grounds. Over the last few years, we have removed more than 1 million pounds of trash from lower Steelhead Creek and lower Arcade Creek which flows into Steelhead Creek. Endangered Chinook Salmon must pass through Steelhead Creek to reach Dry Creek and other upper watersheds.
After wading upstream nearly a mile, we managed to remove countless clothes, blankets, plastic bags, cans, plastic bottles, a fence post and even a shopping cart! We made countless piles, estimated at roughly 1,000 pounds of trash. Yeah!
We are eagerly awaiting the final count for this season’s salmon count, which will be later this winter. Last year only 4 salmon were spotted during the Dry Creek Conservancy counts, so we are already ahead of those numbers! Please cross your fingers there will be a huge increase!
