Celebrated in Brazil since at least the 17th century, the Festa Juninas is the second largest celebration held by Brazilians, second only to Carnival. According to historians, the festival has its origins in the worship of pagan gods, but it was influenced by Catholicism and today there is a strong association with Catholic saints, such as St. Anthony, St. John and St. Peter.

With the arrival of the Portuguese, the festivities, which were already typical in Europe, also arrived in Brazil and little by little began to mix with elements from the interior of the country and the country traditions. Typical foods, dances and decorations used in today's festivities are a combination of parts of African, European and indigenous culture.

Currently, there is a great appreciation of June festivals in the Northeast region. In Campina Grande, Paraíba, for example, the biggest celebration in the country takes place, with fireworks, a giant bonfire, square dance contest and several typical tents with games and food.

With the popularization of June festivals in Brazil, the diffusion of elements related to the festival became more and more common. The typical foods of Festa Junina are an example of this. In all regions, the product used to prepare the party's treats is basically the same: corn. Popcorn, hominy, mush, corn cake and curau are some of the delicacies served.

There are also other foods with very peculiar names, such as Peeled Mané, Pé de Tomboy, Love Apple and Hot Dog. In this universe, quentão also stands out, a kind of tea made with ginger, cinnamon and drips.

Decoration and sympathies
The Festa Junina decoration made with flags and balloons, the bonfire and fireworks are items that characterize the environment of the Festa Junina. There are still some games and practices to which guests are subjected: pau-de-sebo, washing of saints, elegant mail, country wedding and others.

During this festive period, some superstitious people take the opportunity to perform Festa Junina sympathies. There are rituals to ask for a boyfriend, to ward off envy and even to get rid of warts.

Besides Brazil, the celebrations of the Festa Junina are notable in several countries. United Kingdom, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Norway, United States, Puerto Rico, Canada and Australia are some examples of places that celebrate these traditions.
