While fishing for shad on the Umpqua River, I get underwater footage of a constant stream of shad swimming past only a few feet away. I was there for 6 hours and this "river" of fish continued nonstop. Amazing! Shad are anadromous, like salmon and steelhead. This means they spawn, hatch, and early rear in freshwater (in rivers), migrate out to the ocean, only to return again as adults to spawn in freshwater. These are adult fish migrating back upstream to spawn and start the life cycle all over again.
